Voor mij is de W140 vooral bekend onder de bijnaam "de Tank" Bij de introductie begin jaren negentig was er al een trend naar zuinigere auto's. Mercedes heeft daarin een prima bijdrage geleverd door de W140 ruim 400 kilo zwaarder te maken dan de voorganger. Het topmodel met 6 liter 12 cylinder motor werd zelfs 600 kilo zwaarder.
Toch was men bezorgd over de acceptatie van het forse verbruik van het topmodel bij het publiek. Er was een complete ontwikkelingsafdeling mee bezig de motor geschikt te maken voor het uitschakelen van de helft van de cylinders wanneer er weinig vermogen nodig was. Aan die activiteiten kwam abrupt een einde toen een lid van de raad van bestuur opmerkte dat de doelgroep voor het topmodel absoluut niet geinteresseerd was in het verbruik van de 600. Een verstandig besluit.

Hij heeft voor dat het er een uit de laatste serie is met een 5-bak automaat. Voor de variant met 5 liter V8 of 6 liter V12 is nog steeds veel belangstelling. Gek genoeg vinden die makkelijker een nieuwe eigenaar dan deze W140.
