En dan nog de tenaamstelling. Je mag alleen rijden met de auto waarvan het kenteken op jouw naam staat of anders met een machtiging van de eigenaar, anders kom je de grens niet over.
Mijn vrouw heeft gisteren een dag "vast gestaan" aan de grenspost Narva-Ivangorod omdat het kentekenbewijs van haar auto op mijn naam stond. En dat mag niet. Om begrijpelijke redenen: stel dat de auto total-loss raakt of in bewaring genomen wordt of er gedoe is over een garagerekening dan zou ze hem als niet-eigenaar niet kunnen verkopen of niet kunnen afhalen of de rekening niet betalen.
Ik moest dus gisteren in zeven haasten een machtiging schrijven waarin ik verklaarde dat zij met mijn auto mocht rijden en stallen en verkopen en repareren en betalingen verrichten en namens mij mocht optreden jegens het Bevoegd Gezag in de Russische Federatie mét een gevalideerde handtekening (op het gemeentehuis, 5 euro) én een uittreksel uit het bevolkingsregister (acht euro) én een gevalideerde kopie van mijn paspoort (vijf euro) én alledrie de documenten vertaald door een beëdigde tolk (veertig euro) waarna ze eindelijk van Estland naar Rusland kon rijden. Bijkomend probleem was dat ze maar één dag in Estland mocht zijn wegens Coronamaatregelen.
Er zullen best slechte wegen zijn zoals hierboven maar de tweehonderd kilometer tussen Estland en St. Petersburg is een keurige brede tweebaansweg met voldoende bewegwijzering. Ook de armoede en het verval wordt nu minder erg dan het in de jaren '90 was, toen was Rusland echt een derde wereldland geworden, maar het blijft een land met een groot verschil tussen arm en rijk. Ga eens naar New York of San Francisco zou ik zeggen, dat is minstens even erg. Of Rio de Janeiro of Kaapstad... Het doet je beseffen dat we het hier zo slecht nog niet hebben.
O ja, vergeet niet je navigatie te controleren. Mijn Garmin had standaard kaarten voor Midden- en Zuid-Europa maar niet van Scandinavië, de Baltische Staten en Rusland. Die moet je dus apart downloaden en op een SD-kaartje in het apparaat stoppen, dan werkt het allemaal tot aan Vladivostok aan toe.
